Ling Ye is a working mother, public servant, and community organizer. She immigrated to the US with her mom when she was 14 and grew up in Sunset Park and Dyker Heights. She has been in public service for nearly a decade serving the South Brooklyn community. Now, she is running for NYC Council District 38 to champion public safety and prioritize the district’s needs for government services and resources.
Ling grew up with a single mother, who worked various jobs as a garment factory sewer, restaurant server, and street vendor to support herself and her daughter. After graduating from John Dewey High School, she attended the Cooper Union School of Engineering because the school offered free tuition to all students. Instead of working as an engineer, she chose to join public service to serve the working-class and immigrant communities of South Brooklyn. As a child of a single immigrant mother, she had received numerous help from kind-hearted teachers and neighbors while growing up. They told her to pay it forward if she would become in a position to return those favors later in life. And this has been the inspiration and driver of Ling’s community service work.
She had worked under Council Member Carlos Menchaca, Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, and Congressman Dan Goldman. During her decade-long public service career, she helped deliver millions of dollars in public funding projects, including leading a Participatory Budgeting process to engage and empower the grassroots community. She has a keen understanding of community members’ needs and how to address them. Whether it’s helping small businesses access government grants and programs, ensuring vulnerable community members get access to vital resources, or rallying support for communities experiencing violence and hate crimes, Ling never backs down from advocating for her community.
